Over the last 5 years we have developed information display solutions for a variety of companies, locations, and applications. One such application was the above vehicle and passenger information system for East West Resort Transportation that displayed passenger and vehicle information across three monitors at their Eagle Airport counter.
The challenge for any information display system is to make it hands off. The final solution needs to be stable and reliable so staff are not continually required to reboot hosts. Because these applications run 7x24x365 here can be no memory leaks, and the software needs to have capabilities to maintain itself.
Depending upon the content being delivered there are a variety of good solutions. For static graphics and display of database information, a thin client XP Embedded device may do the trick. Systems delivering video may benefit from a unix platform running the host computer.
In the case of this specific project, the host application was a win 32 thin client application connecting to SQL Server through dbXpress. Production hardware was Wyse XP Embedded devices driving the display through 1280x1024 VGA output.
